16.8.2

Description

Basic coated electrode for high temperature stainless steel base materials
This electrode is used to weld 3XXH stainless steels in high temperature applications up to about 800°C. A controlled composition ensures good hot ductility properties, high resistance to thermal embrittlement by intermetallic phases. The low ferrite content guarantees good toughness at low temperatures. Applications include cat crackers, furnace parts and components utilized in the petrochemical, chemical processing and power generation industries. Ease of slag removal reduces post-welding cleaning operations to a minimum.

Description

Application

The 16.8.2 consumables, engineered with precise composition and ferrite control, excel in structural applications up to around 800°C while retaining cryogenic toughness down to -196°C. With Mo at the lower limit for AWS 16.8.2, they constitute a diluted hybrid akin to E308H and E316H. These consumables are versatile, suitable for welding the entire '3XXH' series of stainless steels, providing a balanced blend of creep, oxidation, and general corrosion resistance. Featuring low total Cr+Mo, controlled C, and ferrite content, they resist thermal embrittlement by intermetallic phases, positively impacting creep ductility and thermal fatigue. Stringent specifications prohibit Bismuth bearing constituents, maintaining Bi levels below 0.002% (API 582). Developed to prevent in-service Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) failure in 347H and 321H materials over 12mm thickness, these consumables find applications in catalytic crackers, cyclones, transfer lines, furnace parts, thick-wall steam piping, superheater headers, and specific gas and steam turbine components within petrochemical, chemical process plants, and power generation industries. Preheating is unnecessary, and the maximum interpass temperature is capped at 250°C. Welds are left as-welded, eliminating the need for Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT).

Alloy Type

16.8.2 for high temperature 3XXH stainless steels.

Microstructure

Austenite with delta ferrite of 1-6FN typically. Hot cracking is not reported at low FN.
