SAW
  • FERRITIC - MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL
4122

Description

Martensitic harfacing solid wire
Hard martensitic stainless steel deposit for wear resistance surfacing and for high-grade buildups on non-and low alloyed base steels and tool steels. The deposit has a high wear resistance also at elevated temperatures as well as a good resistance against water, steam and diluted organic acids and is scale resistant up to 900° C. Clean welding area to metallic bright. Typical applications include continuous caster rolls, moulds for ceramic industries, sealing faces on fittings, plungers and claddings on rotors.

Description

Application

The martensitic weld deposit is characterized by high wear resistance, even at elevated temperatures, and offers excellent resistance to water, steam, and diluted organic acids. It effectively withstands scaling up to 900 °C, making it ideal for high-quality overlays and deposits on unalloyed, low-alloyed steels and tool steels. Key applications include sealing surfaces on fittings, pistons, and rotor linings. Additional applications include rollers and molds for continuous wheel casting in the ceramics sector. Martensitic stainless steels, due to their carbon content, are frequently chosen for their corrosion resistance and exceptional mechanical strength in pumps, valves, and shafts for boats. They are also used to counter wear in cutlery, medical instruments (such as scalpels, razors, and surgical forceps), ball bearings, razor blades, polymer injection molds, and brake discs for bicycles and motorcycles. Prior to welding, it is essential to clean the area until a bright metallic finish is achieved. The preheating temperature should range between 150 and 400 °C, depending on the size of the piece and the base material. Slow cooling is recommended and, if necessary, a tempering process.

Alloy Type

Martensitic steel for wear and corrosion resistant hardfacings.

Microstructure

The microstructure comprises tempered martensite and some carbide.

Materials

Surfacing can be performed on all weldable base materials, unalloyed and low-alloyed. Welding of corrosion resistant chromium steels as well as other similar-alloyed steels with C-contents up to 0.20% (repair welding).
