316LCF

Description

Controlled ferrite rutile coated electrode for 316L base materials used in cryogenic applications
Its basic-rutile coating ensures an excellent combination of welding performance in all positions, except for vertical down, and a high resistance to cracking providing smooth arc transfer. Excellent weldability with a spatter free arc and self-releasing slag result in a very smooth bead appearance. These electrodes are used for Mo bearing austenitic stainless type 316L used in cryogenic applications (down to -196°C). These electrodes have a controlled ferrite (3÷8). Mainly applications include pipework and vessel for cryogenic service.

Description

Application

These consumables are specifically designed for use with austenitic stainless steels containing a molybdenum (Mo) percentage between 1.5% and 3%. Among these, 316/316L steels are widely recognized for their excellent pitting resistance, along with providing significant protection against many acids and general corrosion. Electrodes with controlled ferrite for SMAW welding and cored wires have been specifically designed to operate under cryogenic service conditions. Typical applications include pipelines and vessels intended to operate at cryogenic temperatures (-196 °C), such as in the case of liquefied natural gas (LNG). These materials are not suitable for 316/316H steels intended for high-temperature structural applications. No preheating is necessary, and the maximum interpass temperature can reach 250 °C (up to 300 °C on thicker section materials). No post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is required. To ensure optimal impact properties, it is recommended to apply heat inputs at the upper limit of the allowed ranges.

Alloy Type

Controlled ferrite 316L austenitic stainless steels for joining 316L base materials used in cryogenic applications.

Microstructure

Austenite with a controlled level of ferrite, 2-5FN (3-8FN for solid wires).
