Description

Rod for stabilized austenitic stainless steels
The chemical composition of this rod is identical to that of 316, with the exception of the addition of niobium. Niobium prevents chromium carbide precipitation and improves resistance to intergranular corrosion. It is also used for depositing corrosion-resistant layers and inserts for valve seats on medium carbon alloy steel, as well as for joining austenitic stainless steels containing molybdenum stabilized with titanium or niobium. It withstands intergranular and wet corrosion up to 400 °C. The higher silicon content compared to standard 318L improves the welding flow and bead appearance.

Description

Application

This electrode is ideal for welding titanium or niobium-stabilized austenitic stainless steels containing molybdenum. It can also be used as an alternative for welding unstabilized grades such as 316/316L. However, it is not recommended for structural applications exceeding 400 °C nor for cryogenic uses. Furthermore, it is employed for depositing corrosion-resistant overlays and for forming valve seat inserts on medium carbon steels. This electrode is generally supplied with a typical ferrite content ranging from 3 to 14 FN. No preheat operation is required and the maximum interpass temperature is set at 250 °C.

Austenite with 3-14FN (3-12% ferrite), typically 10FN.
