INVAR
Application
Invar®, also known generically as FeNi36 (64FeNi in the US), is an iron-nickel alloy renowned for its remarkably low coefficient of thermal expansion across a broad temperature range. It exhibits a thermal expansion rate roughly one-tenth that of carbon steel up to 200°C. With 36% nickel content, this alloy maintains consistent dimensions from normal atmospheric temperatures to approximately 260°C, demonstrating a low coefficient of expansion even in cryogenic conditions as low as -100°C. Moreover, it retains robust strength and toughness in cryogenic conditions. Its versatility extends to various applications, including the construction of tanks and piping for storing and transporting liquefied gases. Additionally, it finds utility in molds for composite components, piezoelectric injectors, echoboxes, and filters for mobile telephone relay stations. Specially crafted consumables complement this alloy's exceptionally low thermal expansion, providing the necessary flexibility to address challenges associated with solidification and reheat cracking during welding processes.
