INVAR
Application
INVAR alloy is renowned for its low thermal expansion and consists of a specific mixture of nickel-iron containing 36% nickel. This characteristic makes it almost invariant in size within the range of normal atmospheric temperatures. It exhibits a particularly low coefficient of expansion from cryogenic temperatures up to about 260 °C. INVAR maintains excellent strength and toughness even when exposed to cryogenic conditions. It finds ideal application in tanks and pipes intended for the storage and transport of liquefied gases. This consumable material is expertly designed to exhibit extremely reduced thermal expansion, effectively preventing solidification and reheat cracking.
Alloy Type
Iron-based alloy with 36% nickel.
Microstructure
Fe-Ni-based binary alloy, mainly composed of face-centered cubic (fcc) austenite.
Materials
FeNi36 and similar low thermal expansion alloys.
