Description

Controlled ferrite Rutile-basic coated electrode for 304L base materials used in cryogenic applications
Its basic-rutile coating ensures an excellent combination of welding performance in all positions, except for vertical down, and a high resistance to cracking providing smooth arc transfer. Excellent weldability with a spatter free arc and self-releasing slag result in a very smooth bead appearance. These electrodes are used to weld 304L stainless steels (18/8) with good toughness down to -196°C. These product have a controlled ferrite (3÷8). Mainly applications include pipework and vessel for cryogenic service.

Description

Application

These welding consumables are designed for the welding of 18Cr/8Ni stainless steels, ensuring performance in service temperatures as low as -196°C. Specifically engineered for cryogenic service, the controlled ferrite shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) electrodes and flux-cored wires are well-suited for applications such as pipework and vessels in environments like liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. In this context, no preheating is necessary, and the maximum interpass temperature is recommended at 250°C (with the possibility of accepting 300°C for thicker section materials). Furthermore, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is not required. To achieve optimal impact properties, it is advisable to utilize heat inputs at the higher end of the allowable ranges during the welding process. This approach ensures that the welded joints maintain the desired mechanical properties, particularly impact resistance, in extremely low-temperature environments like those encountered in cryogenic services.

Alloy Type

Controlled ferrite 308L austenitic stainless steels for joining 304L base materials used in cryogenic applications.

Microstructure

Austenite with a controlled level of ferrite, 2-5FN (3-8FN for solid wires).
