Application
These aluminum alloys, characterized by elevated tensile and corrosion strength, find suitability in diverse applications such as shipbuilding, the railway and automotive industries, cryogenic tanks, and pressure vessel fabrication. The addition of manganese and magnesium to these alloys not only increases tensile strength but also significantly enhances resistance to low-cycle fatigue. Moreover, the inclusion of these elements contributes measurably to improvements in corrosion resistance and imparts good weldability characteristics to the alloys. Typically employed in marine and structural applications where high strengths, substantial fracture toughness for impact resistance, and resilience to corrosive elements are paramount, these alloys offer a valuable combination of properties. However, it is important to note that these alloys are not recommended for elevated temperature applications due to their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the alloys are non-heat treatable.
Alloy Type
Consumables for welding of Al-Mg, Al-Mg-Mn alloys up to 5% Mg.
Microstructure
Face-centered cubic lattice.
Materials
The alloy is not recommended for elevated temperature applications (> 65 °C) due to its susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. The alloy is not-heat treatable.
